A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue to be examined. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma and whether it is epithelioid sarcomatoid or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and offer curative treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, including paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The odds of survival are worse when a mesothelioma has advanced. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatments and then recur. The doctor may suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the outlook of patients.
