Like other iRobots with premium features (including the top model), they use smart mapping to produce precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. The robots also have the feature of Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors They're also particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws, however, that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to getting stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate rooms with lots of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also extremely quiet and works when you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has an impressive suction system and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best robot vacuum for carpets, although it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensor technology that can stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time to provide cleaner and more efficient cleaning. You can alter its cleaning schedule and set up zones with the well-designed app. Its battery life is average compared to other models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mop and extend them when in a carpeted room, which helps prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is great to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

Its obstacle detection was great and it stayed clear of fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums this feature, which we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competition. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit which could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, though it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and better-looking. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable, but it will cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot hoover and mop mop and vacuum. It has a range of advanced features that will make you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine like Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and dry mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and detect obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a specific area of your home by using the app or voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you own a number of furniture. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad that has a reciprocating motion that is cleaner than the other robot vacuums best mop cleaners we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app also provides access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a strong suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker, cheaper alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It is great at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get stuck on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we've test. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive and has a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
