Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display a preview of an item's next upgrade level if there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers, for example. Another significant change is that crests have one usage and it's crucial to make use of them in a responsible manner. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the top-quality equipment that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
