Non-occupational asbestos exposure may cause peritoneal mesothelioma. Studies have demonstrated that the risk of mesothelioma is increased with each year spent in asbestos exposure. In a case-control study conducted in Los Angeles and New York doctors compared the jobs mentioned on death certificates of men who died of peritoneal mesothelioma to their interview with their relatives.
