A biopsy involves removing a small portion of the affected tissue to test. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma does not have spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also provide an effective treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has spread inside the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

If a mesothelioma has advanced and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The reason for this is that the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and can recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than chemotherapy on its own.
