Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can be conditions. It is often mistaken for hernias, gastrointestinal issues such as colitis or Crohn's and other forms of abdominal cancers. Many patients do not declare their asbestos exposure and do not seek medical attention. If mesothelioma is found doctors may recommend the procedure of a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue that is examined. This procedure can reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The reason for this is that the tumors are able to become resistant to certain treatments and may be recurred. The doctor might suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of patients.
