There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology and is therefore prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tightly packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you're at work or school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with a self-emptying bin as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensors that help it avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and offer better cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average in comparison to similar models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and extend them when it's in a carpeted area to prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is great for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. Its obstacle detection was top-notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds and cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robotic hoovers vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky units of the rivals. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also is among the most intelligent, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 in our evaluations, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a concern in the mornings before work, or at night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and better-looking. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable, but it's more expensive and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features to help you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the automatic vacuum cleaner and mop works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house in accordance with how dirty they tend to be.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house using the app or voice controls. A stair mode can be useful if you have a lot furniture. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a reciprocating movement that cleans better that most mop cleaners for robots that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app also gives access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it is able to reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It also has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, but it is more likely to be caught on low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums we've test. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive, and a smaller base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
