What is Evolution?

The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into different species in an orderly and predictable manner.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. The change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestor of birds.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

YECs are the most well known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs may be less well-known, but their beliefs are as passionate as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution in their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
