A biopsy is the removal of tiny pieces of tissue to be tested. This procedure can help determine the stage of mesothelioma, and whether it is epithelioid biphasic, or sarcomatoid.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and provide the best treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses, the prognosis becomes poorer. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and may recur. The specialist may recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the outlook of patients.
