A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide the best treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They will then recommend palliative treatment for the patient. For example paracentesis, which is a procedure to drain abdominal fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and then recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than merely chemotherapy alone.
