Exposure can occur when asbestos is mined, handled or removed from a structure or when people breathe in dust from the removal of asbestos-containing materials. The greatest risk is for those who have worked with asbestos under these conditions.

The non-occupational exposure to asbestos could cause peritoneal cancer. Studies have shown that the risk of mesothelioma increases with each year they are exposed to asbestos. In one case-control study in Los Angeles and New York doctors compared the professions that were listed on death certificates of men who died from mesothelioma of the peritoneal region to their interviews with their next-of-kin.
