Mesothelioma is a difficult condition to recognize. The early signs can resemble symptoms of other conditions, like hernia, or irritable bowel syndrome.

Signs and symptoms

Asbestos fibers may travel through the body after inhalation. From there, they can be stuck in the abdominal lining or other organs, creating inflammation and irritation that can lead to tumor growth. A X-ray as well as a CT scan can help doctors detect any lumps or symptoms of illness. In certain instances, doctors who treat mesothelioma will also order a biopsied to make a more precise diagnosis.

Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms generally start in the abdominal region and can lead to extreme abdominal pain and weight loss, bloating stomach fluid accumulation nausea, vomiting, and other digestive problems. Other symptoms include chest pain, swelling and fatigue. When these symptoms occur it is essential that victims seek medical attention because they could be caused by other illnesses.

There are no FDA-approved screening tests for mesothelioma of the peritoneum, but researchers are working on developing methods to detect the disease's early stages. The process of identifying mesothelioma's stage is crucial as it will determine the treatment options.

A mesothelioma specialist may perform paracentesis (percutaneous needle biopsy) to take the specimen for tests in the laboratory. These tests can reveal whether the cancer cells are epithelioid (epithelioid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic within the tumor.
