The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They will then recommend palliative treatments for the patient. The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The reason for this is that the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than chemotherapy alone.
