Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of peritoneal mesothelioma. Asbestos fibers can cause irritation to abdominal tissues as well as cell mutations when consumed or inhaled. Over time, this can lead to tumors that form mesothelioma of peritoneum.

Construction or manufacturing work is often the first location where asbestos exposure starts. These industries can utilize asbestos-containing materials like fireproofing and insulation. Asbestos is also found in household products such as roof tiles and flooring. Even small amounts of asbestos exposure can cause a person to be at risk of developing mesothelioma. Peritoneal Mesothelioma may mimic other diseases. It is often mistaken for hernias, digestive issues such as colitis or Crohn's and other forms of abdominal cancer. Because of this, many patients do not report their exposure to asbestos and they don't seek medical care. A biopsy may be recommended by a specialist to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma.
