The fibers are then woven into sheets or sandwich laminates, and then infused with resins to create a rigid material that is both durable and light. The material is able to be used in the manufacture of high-performance components for aerospace, automotive and sporting goods applications.

Carbon fiber production is complex and requires a lot of equipment and experience. The process begins with a polymeric pre-cursor that forms the molecular basis for the carbon-rich fibers. In the past, carbon fibers were derived from rayon or pitch. Nowadays, the majority are made of polyacrylonitrile, which is produced from the chemical ammonia, a common commodity, and propylene.

Carbon fiber can be shaped into various composite materials. The strength and stiffness of the material can be adjusted by changing the temperature at which it is processed. For instance, a carbon fiber can be heated to increase its tensile strength as well as modulus of elasticity. It can also be machined to create voids and holes which decrease its tensile strength, but increases its modulus of elastic.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation, which protects it from the ravages caused by corrosion. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than metal, which means it is less likely to change its shape when exposed to heat. The properties of fatigue are superior over those of metal, so components made from carbon fiber will last longer than metal counterparts.

Carbon fiber is used in the tailplanes and fuselage of aircraft. The strength and lightness of carbon fiber has allowed designers to create aircrafts that are more secure and efficient than they have ever been.
