Many patients do not declare their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical care. If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend a biopsy for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy is the process of removing just a small portion of affected tissue for testing. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide the best treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The doctor may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the prognosis for the patient.
