It covers areas such as eligibility criteria and flexibility in recruitment as well as adherence to interventions and follow-up. They found that 14 of these trials scored pragmatic or highly pragmatic (i.e. scores of 5 or more) in any one or more of these domains and that the majority of these were single-center.

Studies with high pragmatism scores are likely to have more criteria for eligibility than conventional RCTs. They also include populations from many different hospitals. The authors argue that these characteristics could make pragmatic trials more effective and applicable to everyday practice, but they don't necessarily mean that a trial using a pragmatic approach is free of bias. The pragmatism principle is not a fixed attribute; a pragmatic test that does not possess all the characteristics of an explanation study may still yield valuable and valid results.
