A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient. For example, paracentesis to drain abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the outlook of a patient.
