Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting its base stats or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs with a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, except for inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials required do not.
