Many patients don't report their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical attention. If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend a biopsy for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading it is possible to remove the tumors. They will also offer a curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatment and then recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction, which is hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of a patient.
