Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, dropped by enemies, or obtained as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

To upgrade an item of armor, the user must select it, and then click on the Upgrade button located in the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen, showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be and also the material or component needed to complete the upgrade.

There are three kinds that are universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be put in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are gems that are only available in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item upgrader mod they are attached to, for instance adding a Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs by a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, with the exception for inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process differs from previous versions in some key ways. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials required do not. If an item doesn't attain its maximum level, the NPC gives the player the choice to transfer it to a different character and re-infuse the item upgrades with a different set of upgrades. This process takes up to two hours and will cost the same amount of materials but will have a lower chance of success.
