For one, the Q5's navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology and is therefore prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera to see around corners.

Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used while you're at work, or going to school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few just a few seconds.

The robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks much like a Roomba unit than the boxy units of the rivals. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score 100% in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work, or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It can be used to create cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app also grants access to a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
