Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our bare floor tests They're also particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great deal for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save some money. It's also quiet and works while you're at work or in school. 3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxy units this mop and robot vacuum is among the most appealing looking in our reviews. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It features advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum to score a perfect 10 in our evaluations due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot vacuum cleaners best we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It comes with a simple mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's a noisy unit, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you attempt to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to put up some more volume and some extra cost this is a capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot mop and vacuum. It comes with a variety of features that are advanced and will help you forget your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the autonomous vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house according to the degree of dirt they are.

If you have a bigger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your house needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. A stair mode can be useful if you own a number of furniture. For busy families recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot autonomous vacuum to resume where it left off could be very useful.

The app has a range of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD offers a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It's good at vacuuming, but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit noisier than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
