The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept in removing dog hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our top option. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great option, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly unfinished home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and you can use it while you're at work, or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning robot mop and vacuum maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles, like pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and vacuum combo uses advanced sensor technology to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to similar models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted area which prevents cross-contamination. Its flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as efficient on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did an excellent job cleaning a variety of floors and rooms with mixed flooring types, including some area rug. Its obstacle detection was top notch and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog turds, socks, shoes and cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With a sleek circular design that appears more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' boxy units this robot vacuum cleaner reviews vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive designs in our tests. The latest model from iRobot is among the most intelligent and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with an intuitive mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device that could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to live some more volume and some additional cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and cleans and drys the mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner comes with a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home depending on how dirty they tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it's worth choosing a model that has spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned using the app or voice command. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. Also, a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than the price suggests. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to set up the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
