The best robot hoover can vacuum and mop without needing your attention, and leaves your floors spotless. Its surprisingly affordable price and high-end features (such as dirt detection) are a plus.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the pricier Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They are equipped with motors that are top-of-the line and can suction up to 5,500 Pascals. Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model) they utilize smart mapping to produce precise floorplans that avoid obstacles like cords and furniture leg. They also come with carpet boost, a feature that increases the robot's power when it sees a lot of dirt on the carpet, allowing it clean quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests of floors with no carpet, and they are particularly adept in removing hair from dogs. They do have some flaws, however, that prevent them from being our top option. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate densely packed rooms very efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a great deal for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work or at school. The only thing it lacks that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has a self-emptying dustbin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensor technology that can stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to provide better cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average when compared to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to remove and extend its mops. This can help avoid cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, X30 Ultra was the most efficient good robot vacuum vacuum/mop which could sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a great cleaning job on various rooms and floors with various flooring types, including certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was excellent and it was able to avoid fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular look that looks much like a Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competitors. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to the combination of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with an easy mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings before work, or in the evening when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit costly but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however, it's going to cost you more and make more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that will let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the auto vacuum and mop's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

If you have a bigger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your house needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. A stair mode can be useful if you have a lot furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot hoover and mop autonomous vacuum to resume where it left off could be very beneficial.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you might imagine from its price. It does a stellar job cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses an oscillating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, plan a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app also provides access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it can reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It also has a powerful suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for hair of pets. And you can set up a spot cleaning that scours a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras look like cute eyes. It is great at vacuuming, however it is more likely to get caught in low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums that we have examined. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive and a small base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
