Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our first option. One of them is that the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular look that looks much like a Roomba model than the boxy models of the competition. It's among our most attractive robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that has a perfect 10 in our evaluations due to a mix of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum mop cleaner robot and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house depending on how dirty those areas are.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a specific area of your home via the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have number of furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than its price would suggest. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using only one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured application and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas to improve performance. The app has a range of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
