Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of the flaws of the Q5 is its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to get stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate through rooms with a lot of people well during our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also quiet and operates while you're at work or at school. The only thing it's missing that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. If you want to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a compact, sleek package. Its intelligent cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as good as other hoovers when it comes to deep cleaning.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination is sleek and has a circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the competitors. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's still quite loud, which can be an issue if you use it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally capable and look better. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable however, it will cost you more and produce more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features to help you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not foolproof in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has an attribute known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty these areas tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it's worth choosing a model that has spot or zone cleaning mode.
