A biopsy is the removal the smallest piece of tissue to be tested. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma does not have spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also offer an effective treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread inside the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses the chances of survival are less. This is because the cancer are able to become resistant to certain treatments and may be recurred. The doctor might recommend an amalgamation of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy on its own.
