Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms can appear similar to other conditions and be mistaken for hernias, gastrointestinal issues like Crohn's disease or colitis, or other forms of abdominal cancer. Because of this, many patients don't report their exposure to asbestos and they don't seek medical care. A biopsy may be recommended by a specialist to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy is the removal of tiny pieces of tissue to be examined. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses, the prognosis becomes poorer. This is because the tumors are able to become resistant to certain treatments, and they may recur. The doctor may suggest the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis for the patient.
