Asbestos is a mineral found naturally that was once used in numerous industrial and construction processes. Its durability and resistance to heat made it an ideal material for a variety of products, such as insulation, brakes and shingles. In the United States, asbestos was used most frequently from the 1930s to the early 1980s.

Mesothelioma is a condition that occurs when asbestos fibres cause irritation to the mesothelial tissues of the body. Exposure to asbestos can be experienced during mining or handling process, or the removal of asbestos from a building. It also happens when people breathe in dust from asbestos materials that have been dismantled. Workers who have worked with asbestos in these conditions are at risk of developing mesothelioma.

Non-occupational asbestos exposure may cause mesothelioma of the peritoneal region. Studies have proven that mesothelioma risks are increased with each year in asbestos exposure. In one case-control study in Los Angeles and New York doctors compared the professions listed on the death certificates of the men who died of peritoneal mesothelioma to their interview with their relatives.
