A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also provide an option for curative treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They will then recommend palliative treatments for the patient. The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor may suggest the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the outlook of the patient.
