Many patients do not disclose their asbestos exposure, and do not seek medical care. Doctors may suggest a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy involves the removal of a small piece of tissue to be examined. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also offer an option for curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses, the prognosis becomes poorer. This is because the cancer may become resistant to certain treatments, and they may recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of the patient.
