Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our bare floor tests and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have some flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you want to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its smart cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robotic hoover for carpets, but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors when it comes to deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors that help it stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to ensure better cleaning. You can alter the schedule of cleaning and even customize zones through the well-designed app. Its battery life is average when compared to similar models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a carpeted area which prevents cross-contamination. The flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a good cleaning job on various rooms and floors with various flooring types, including some area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top notch and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog socks, turds, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that appears more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky models of the competitors. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that has 100% in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work, or during the night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally powerful and more attractive. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient however, it's going to cost you more and make more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the best robot vacuum and mop. It comes with a variety of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house depending on how dirty the areas tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot vacuums with mop to clean a particular area of your home using the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. Additionally a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you'd expect from its price tag. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad and a reciprocating movement that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate a mapping run, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance. The app also grants access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and under furniture more easily. It also has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for hair of pets. It also has the ability to set up a spot cleaning that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, but it is more likely to be caught on low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums we've examined. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that can't be used as a bin for emptying.
