Mesothelioma, a cancerous growth that is found in the linings of organs such as the abdomen and lungs (pleura) is caused by exposure to asbestos. It's usually caused by exposure to asbestos, which is a group of minerals that are made of microscopic fibres.

Mesothelioma may manifest anywhere between 20 and 60 year after exposure. X-rays and blood tests can be used to detect mesothelioma, and determine the extent to which it has spread.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is a malignant cells develop in the lining around the lungs (pleura). Pleura is a two-layer of tissue that covers most organs. Cancerous pleural msothelioma is most commonly located in the lungs, or the chest wall. It can trigger symptoms like shortness of breathe, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.

Asbestos is the primary cause of pleural msothelioma. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause damage to the lung's lining. This can lead to inflammation and scarring which may cause changes that lead to out of control cell growth.

Some people exposed to asbestos may not notice symptoms until years after their initial exposure. Mesothelioma can take a long time to develop. Those diagnosed with the disease generally are men, and those who were assigned male at birth older adults who have spent years working in industries that used large quantities of asbestos prior to when it was controlled or used in the military, specifically in the Navy.

The symptoms vary depending on the area of the tumor. The symptoms are typically caused by increased pressure or swelling near the affected lung. The symptoms include fatigue, undiagnosed weight loss, chest pain and back pain. X-rays or CT or MRIs may be used as a diagnostic tool to rule out any other conditions that may be causing similar symptoms. If pleural asbestosis is identified doctors will determine the stage of the cancer to determine the most effective treatment options.

The International Mesothelioma Interest Group has developed the staging system. The first step to determining the stage of the disease is to conduct an examination of the medical records of the patient. X-rays and chest MRI are also used to determine if there is any tumors or other abnormalities, that may indicate mesothelioma.

There are three types of mesothelioma. They can be classified based on the type of cells they form: Epithelioid Mesothelioma is the most frequent malignant mesothelioma (60 to 80 percent of cases). It is usually easier to treat than other types. Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is the second most common type of mesothelioma (between 10% and 15 percent of cases). It is more difficult to treat than epithelioid mesothelioma.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in abdominal cavity's lining (peritoneum). It is less common than the pleural type. As with all mesothelioma, the peritoneal cancer is caused by asbestos exposure. However, unlike pleural mesothelioma, people are more likely to develop this kind of mesothelioma by ingesting asbestos fibers instead of inhaling asbestos fibers. This kind of mesothelioma usually occurs in older adults and is more prevalent for women than men.

Mesothelioma can take a long time to show signs, and the nonspecific nature of its early stages makes it difficult to diagnose. However, mesothelioma experts know how to identify the disease. Complete patient histories and imaging and blood tests, can aid doctors in making an accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma.

When mesothelioma is discovered, a doctor will determine the stage of the cancer using the TNM system. This system of staging outlines the extent of the tumor's spread and influences the treatment options. The lower the stage the more treatment options are available.

Because peritoneal mesothelioma is so uncommon, it can be hard to recognize. The symptoms of this condition resemble those of many other conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract and abdomen, which includes abdominal discomfort, fever and weight loss. Patients who experience symptoms that are not clear are advised to consult with a physician.

Doctors will start with a physical examination and conducting basic blood tests. If these tests reveal the possibility of having a cancer, an oncologist will perform more in-depth diagnostic tests, such as biopsies. This will give an accurate picture of the patient's health, and identify any possible mesothelioma symptoms.

Asbestos is the primary reason for mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure can happen in the workplace, but also at home or at school. Asbestos exposure can be extremely dangerous when it takes place for prolonged periods of time. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that can develop when asbestos dust or asbestos particles get into the body and cause irritation or inflammation. Over time, the irritation and inflammation can cause cells to transform into cancerous cells and create tumors. The cancerous tissue that is created can spread to other tissues and cause symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, fever, weight gain and swelling.

Cardiovascular Mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that affects the heart's lining or the pericardium. This type of mesothelioma lawsuit is less than 1percent of mesothelioma cases and it is one of the most difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are so similar to heart disease. Many patients are diagnosed with heart disease before doctors can confirm they are suffering from pericardial msothelioma.

As with other types of mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause pericardial cancer. Asbestos fibers are believed to be absorbed into the pericardium through bloodstream. The fibers could later travel to other organs, including the heart. Pericardial Mesothelioma usually occurs in the outer layer but it may also occur in its inner layer. Pericardial mesothelioma is a more serious prognosis than other types of mesothelioma.

Chest pain, fatigue and breathing difficulties are all symptoms of pericardial Mesothelioma. Due to the rareness of this mesothelioma type, it is especially important for victims to have an exhaustive medical examination. If they have any prior history of exposure to asbestos, it is essential to tell their doctor.

A CT scan or an echocardiogram is often the first step in diagnosing mesothelioma. These tests can reveal the accumulation of fluid around the heart and visible pericardial tumours. If these tests reveal the presence of mesothelioma then doctors may perform additional procedures to confirm the diagnosis. These include a biopsy, or radiation.

A mesothelioma biopsies is an operation where a tiny piece of tissue is removed from the area affected and then examined under the microscope. This will allow doctors to determine the type and stage of mesothelioma.

Patients with mesothelioma can be treated at cancer centers and specialized hospitals across the country. Based on the type of mesothelioma, treatment options could include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Some patients may be eligible to receive free or low-cost health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs. This financial aid is essential for mesothelioma attorney sufferers to reduce the cost of treatment. Contact a VA-approved mesothelioma attorney to find out more about the benefits available to you.

Reproductive Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma may develop in the linings of organs in the chest or abdomen. It can also form in the lining surrounding the testicles and the heart (pericardium and tunica vaginalis). Men are affected more than women due to unknown causes. The exposure to asbestos is the most significant risk factor. The signs usually don't appear until decades after exposure.

Mesothelioma is more frequent among asbestos-related workers during work. In most instances, chest pains or a persistent cough are the primary symptoms. These symptoms are typically similar to the symptoms of other lung disorders and, therefore, mesothelioma is often mistakenly diagnosed. If diagnosed, patients could undergo an array of tests to find out how far the cancer has spread and its stage.

These tests may include imaging scans and blood such as X-rays and CT scans. A biopsy may be taken by a mesothelioma specialist to confirm the diagnosis. The biopsy may be carried out by using a core needle or laparoscopically. The biopsy should be done by a specialist in peritoneal mesothelioma. General medical oncologists do not have the expertise to diagnose peritoneal mesothelioma and could miss diagnosing the condition.

The results of mesothelioma test will aid doctors in determining the best treatment plan for you. The treatment will depend on the extent to which the cancer has spread, as well as your overall health. It is usually possible to control symptoms, and treatments include draining fluid from the lungs chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Most types of mesothelioma can be treated with chemotherapy. However, these medications can also affect healthy cells. They can harm ovarian tissue which can impact fertility. This is particularly true for mesothelioma of the peritoneal region, which occurs in the area surrounding reproductive organs.

The mesothelioma type and severity you have, as well as your age and general health can affect how fast the cancer is treated and its prognosis. In the UK about 2700 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year. It is typical for the disease to develop in the lung's lining (pleura) but it can be found in the linings of the tummy (peritoneum) and less often around the heart or testicles.
