Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

If an individual upgrades a gathering tool and replaces the glyphs with a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component, it will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in several important ways.
