Upgrades give you boosts in certain statistics. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. A random extra substat is also boosted alongside each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used to upgrade will remain in use for a long time and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than purchasing new gear from other sources. For example upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from item upgraders NPCs for various currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next upgrade level in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot of the item and the current item level. For example, weapons will cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade item costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items that are being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or complete quests.

Crests

Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The crests can then be exchanged with an item upgrader such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult however, the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to get their gear up to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the best gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, which will only be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with high-quality gear.
