A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue to be tested. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer the best treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

If a mesothelioma has advanced and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatment and then recur. The doctor might recommend the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of a patient.
