If mesothelioma has been identified experts may suggest a biopsy for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of just a small portion of affected tissue to test. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid) or Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma does not have spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also offer an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when mesothelioma is advanced. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and may recur. The doctor might recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than chemotherapy on its own.
