This robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears much like a Roomba model than the bulky models from the competition. It's one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This could be a problem in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for one with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home via the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you have a number of furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be very beneficial.
