This is why many patients do not report their exposure to asbestos and they don't seek medical care. If mesothelioma is found experts may suggest a biopsy for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and provide curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has spread inside the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatments and then recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than merely chemotherapy alone.
