The magnetic field that is induction emits low-level electromagnetic waves within the kilohertz frequency range which can be harmful to health. This amount can be reduced by the minimum distance of five to ten centimetres and by making sure that only the appropriate pan is placed on an active cooking zone.

There are a variety of induction hobs offered by various manufacturers, with different capacities and features. The basic model has four rings that can each be operated independently. The power levels can be adjusted with an easy control. Touch the mark that represents the ring you want to operate and then either tap the + or - buttons, or move your finger across the 'power bar' to select the appropriate setting.

A lot of induction hobs have the bridging zone, which allows you to join two or more rings to create one larger cooking space - perfect for larger pots that don't fit on individual rings. Some have a "wok" setting that gives additional heating power for woks, while others have a 'free-standing' option that can be set on a smooth, flat worktop, which will save space.

Some include rotary controls or dials which require you to twist and press your fingers to adjust the settings. You can also choose from a variety of power outputs for each ring, and some hobs come with an auto-restart function which will allow the appliance to return to its previously selected cooking mode after a brief time.
