It's thus susceptible to become stuck on socks and shoes, and it couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also extremely quiet and operates while you are at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. With a sleek circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba rather than the compact models This robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive designs in our evaluations. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum best we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has an intuitive mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit which could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are similarly capable and better-looking. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and a little more cost it's a capable two-in-one that should delight most.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It comes with a variety of advanced features that will make you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time hazard detection but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty the areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you have a large furniture. Also a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most mop cleaners for robots that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured application and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app also provides access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
