Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. Each upgrade also boosts a random substat.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variation (like Eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for the latter due to the requirement to roll an exact version.
