Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can be conditions. It is often mistaken for hernias or gastrointestinal problems like Crohn's or colitis, and other types of abdominal cancer. Because of this, many patients do not report their exposure to asbestos and they don't seek medical treatment. A biopsy may be recommended by a specialist to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy involves removing only a small amount of affected tissue for testing. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma, and whether it is epithelioid biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and provide curative treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

The odds of survival are worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the cancer can become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor might recommend an amalgamation of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of a patient.
