Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks, and each item can only be upgraded a certain number of times before it's "leveled out."
