A biopsy is the removal tiny pieces of tissue to be tested. This procedure will reveal the stage of mesothelioma, and whether it is epithelioid biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer curative treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The specialist may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction, which is hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis for the patient.
