The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Usually, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while objects with strong bases, such as eth titans do not vary in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be used to upgrade trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or extra impact when the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, found as loot by enemies, or received from chests or missions. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be at a certain level before they can be upgraded.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, players will have to select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show a preview on the right side of the screen, showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be as well as the necessary component or material needed to make that happen.

There are three types of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that are subject to a type restriction. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other equipment. In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph by another the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now classified into tracks and each item can only be upgraded a certain number of times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials needed do not. This lets players focus their efforts on a few key items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading cost of upgrades across several items.

Once an item has been finished being leveled, it will be capable of receiving an upgrade set of components, as well as an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy. It resets to 0 if the upgrade fails, or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

After a piece has been upgraded to the maximum level, it is able to get the affixes needed to enhance its abilities. The number of affixes available will depend on the item's class. Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of changing the upgrade components of an item. It is an essential element of the game that can increase the strength, damage or other attributes. Reroll tokens are earned by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can be used to upgrade either the original item or a similar item. In the past, some upgrade items had priority affixes that made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you'd get the stats that mattered most to your build often than other. In general, armor and weapons have a higher trade value when they are updated. Upgrades to gold are recommended for weapons with spell/weapon-damage glyphs. This will result in a significant improvement in their stats. This will also increase the defense of armor that has an updated appearance.
