Peritoneal Mesothelioma may mimic other diseases. It is often mistaken for hernias or gastrointestinal issues like colitis or Crohn's and other forms of abdominal cancer. A lot of patients do not report their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical attention. If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend the procedure of a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue to be tested. This test can determine if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also offer a curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The doctor might recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy on its own.
