A biopsy is the removal of the smallest piece of tissue to be tested. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatment for the patient. For instance paracentesis to remove abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has progressed. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatment and recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the prognosis of the patient.
