A biopsy is the process of removing only a small amount of affected tissue to test. This procedure can reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

The odds of survival are worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The doctor might recommend the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than merely chemotherapy alone.
